Gut Check honors the people, places and things that obsessed us in 2008. The winner will be named on Tuesday, December 30.
The Not-So-Mighty Dollar
Pros: Seemed like whatever we were talking about this year, we were really talking about money. The food crisis, the everyday grocery bill, restaurants closing: It always came down to either the rising cost of food or the tanking economy. Or both. And it doesn't look like it will get better any time soon.
Cons: Savvy foodies know where to shop to get good food for less (farmers' markets, for one). And if the recession teaches us all to plant victory gardens, maybe, in the long run, that will be a good thing.
