Regular Gut Check readers know that the recall of peanut-butter products possibly contaminated by salmonella has dominated the food-news headlines these past few weeks. Now the CDC, FDA and the Department of Health and Human Services are turning to so-called new media to convey the latest information on product recalls.

To wit: The nifty badge pictured here, the code for which you can copy from this page on the CDC Web site and post on your MySpace profile. Why would you do this? I have no idea. But the fact that you can do this makes me smile.

In addition, the FDA has a Twitter feed for product recalls, HHS has a product-recall blog and the CDC even has a Second Life presence. You can find out more about all the new media offerings at this page.
