Photos: Making the World's Longest BLT at Iron Barley, 8.9.09

The fifth-annual Tomato Fest at Iron Barley in South St. Louis wrapped up Sunday with owner Tom Coghill and a crew of 90 volunteers working to create the world's longest bacon-lettuce-and-tomato sandwich, at 179-feet, two-inches. (That's a lot of bacon -- 500 pounds of savory, crispy, delicious bacon.) The previous record was 169 feet. Video, photos and more BLT stats after the jump. (All photos by Tom Lampe; check out his Flickr page, too.)

Why are people bashing this rediculous, delicious sandwhich??? Are they stupid??? I can't believe dimwitted animal rights activists feel the need to stomp over true glory. I would have ate that for sure.

Mid-western hillbillies... Really? How many mountains have you seen in Missouri? Let's make sure we have a better grasp on regional topography before we start throwing out the stereotypes.

To all who are ripping on this event, get some facts correct first, there wasnt one hillbilly to be found, and if there was they wouldnt be as judgemental as the idiots posting to this event, This was not a publicity stunt for the restaurant, it was a means to support a great cause, (the lift for life academy) which helps inner city kids. This project was to draw attention to the cause, and to have some fun, and to bring the neighborhood together which it did, you would of had to have been there to feel the energy of people helping people.

For all you people with somthing negitive to say , I would like to here what each one of you have done for anyone but yourselves. Tom is always doing things for other people. It is your negitivity that is the problem with St. Louis, there are to many assholes and not enough cool people like Tom, so put that in your corncob and smoke it.

That is so AWESOME! It's good that they used so much bacon because if they didn't, then a bunch of other people would just use it for their mini-sandiwiches. Not making that sandwich wouldn't result in less pigs getting killed, it would result in less pigs being glorified. If you don't eat the meat, someone else will!

Really? What is this "great cause"? To end world hunger? I would really like to know.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this reinforces our nation's already stained image. We look like an idiotic bunch of apathetic wasters and gluttons.

LET'S MAKE A 179 FT BACON SANDWICH TO BREAK A RECORD! WOOOOOOOOO HOOOOO!!!!! WE'RE BIGGER AND BETTER THAN YOU, REST OF THE WORLD. TAKE THAT, STARVING CHILDREN.

someone sent me this link.. I checked it out. I can see now that no matter where you are, its always free range on the internet to talk trash about what you dont know, or what you assume. Gotta love it.
They made a sandwich, theyre proud of it. Does it matter if it was 'hillbillies', hippies or Himalayan whistle kids ?

"Sunday’s six-hour Tomato Fest, also a benefit for Lift for Life Academy, looks to be another blowout with mouth-watering BLTs, local farms selling heirloom tomatoes and other goodies, a tomato art and poetry contest, craft booths, live music, raffles, kids’ activities, Bloody Marys made from fresh tomatoes........"

Yeah, it was a benefit. A delicious one involving bacon. Get the hell over yourselves, maybe even get off your ass and do something. Please stand up and do something more impressive(so we can all bash it on the internet when youre done, of course)

Bacon deserves to be in a food group by itself and a BLT can never be big enough.

What no negative comments about the fact that most of these good people are BIKERS.
Personally I would consider it a major accomplishment to actually get that much bacon cooked and on the sandwich to begin with. How did they keep from eating it all before it was put together.

Last pic in # 5 - the "flame on" one...looool!!! I love it, these BLTs for a good cause should happen all over the states. Dont know if I'd eat much of the sandwich, but definitely fry the bread with a flamethrower! Is that how bacon got cooked too? Awesome!

To all the people who posted negative comments, calling the volunteers fat,or hillbillies, etc, I just have one thing to say. As one of the volunteers and there were many of us, I would like to ask these people, what were you doing at 9:00 on a hot summer Sunday morning? I'll bet you weren't volunteering, helping people you don't even know, so that they might have a better life.

To those who say it wasn't one BLT but several mini BLTs---do you know where we can find a 179.2 foot long oven in which to bake the bread? And for those saying it was a waste of food, it was sold for $5/sammich (which was donated to Lift for Life) and at the end of the day that which was left was donated to local food pantries and shelters. Please get involved next time instead of blasting those who got up early, worked in 95+ degree temperatures and had a great day. You can't ruin it for us. Come next year and you will be welcomed with yummy food, delicious drinks and warm smiles.

all these self-righteous, city-boy leftists who boohoo about the image of a big sandwich and the starving children in a pick-an-edutisement video; all the intolerant generalists who use hillbilly as derogatory term but decry discrimination of popular. cool minorities; all the people who simply can't find good in anything - I tend to hope for your real enlightenment and inner peace. As for the sandwich - bless those freaks.
