​Next week, Gut Check kicks off our third-annual (!) Gut Check Year-End Bonanza as we count down the Top Ten Dishes of 2009 and look back at the year that was -- or will have been. (It's not over yet!) But this week we've already started on our Christmas shopping: The Novice Foodie suggested gifts for the novice foodie in your life, while I offered a few food books both new and old that would make nice stocking stuffers.

What else happened this week?
Throwback of the House suffered fruitcake in cookie form, while Farmers' Market Share enjoyed totally metal Brussels sprouts.

911 hamburger calls and mobius-strip bagels.

The Noble Writ really wanted to write about Rioja, and Drink of the Week really wanted her date to love Brasserie by Niche.

Jon Feraro is Jonny Pizza -- and he gives you his easy pizza recipe.

The Beertender is excited about the direction of American brewing.
