2009 in Review: December

gutcheck1209.jpg

OK, there's really not much point reliving a month that, as of this writing, is still occurring. Especially since we've spent half of this month reviewing the rest of the year -- and the decade. So I'll spare you the full-on <cronkite>That was December 2009</cronkite> treatment.

But there were a few newsworthy items over the past few weeks: the opening of the third Pi location, Kitchen K's plans to close and become Pacific Grill and Kevin Willmann's departure from Erato on Main for his new restaurant, Farmhaus. And if you haven't read them yet, be sure to check out the complete lists of my Top Ten Dishes 2009 and the Ten Most Important St. Louis Restaurant Openings of the Aughts.

2009 in Review: November

November was all about Thanksgiving -- though not in the traditional sense. No, our Thanksgiving was all about booze. (Or maybe that is traditional.) Anyway: The Beertender told you what beers to drink with Thanksgiving dinner, the Noble Writ discussed how to pair wines with your feast, and we listed what you need for a true dive-bar Thanksgiving. October saw the return of Drink of the Week, the column founded by Randall Roberts and continued by Kristie McClanahan that muses on life and libations. Alicia Lohmar is the new author, and we're thrilled to have her as part of the Gut Check family. The rest of the month after the jump.

The Terrace View in Citygarden
August was an unusually busy month, with numerous restaurant openings and closings. Let's dwell on the positive above the fold: The Terrace View opened in Citygarden, Downtown's spiffy new sculpture park; Downtown scored an honest-to-God grocery store in Schnucks' Culinaria; and Molly's in Soulard affected a fairly stunning transformation of itself. More good, some bad, after the jump.

July was a quiet month at Gut Check International Headquarters as St. Louis turned its attention to a certain Midsummer Classic. We did offer dining recommendations to our out-of-town guests -- and, for those who took a shine to St. Louis cuisine, tips on how to bring the magic (or the Ted Drewes, at least) home. What better time than the onset of warm weather for a delicious beer? So what better time than June for the first St. Louis Craft Beer Week? A week filled with tastings, talks and more tastings celebrated the booming craft-beer scene in St. Louis. And speaking of that booming St. Louis craft-beer scene: Some idiot wrote an RFT feature story about it. The rest of the month, after the jump.

2009 in Review: April

In 2008, then-Senator Barack Obama fell in love with Pi's pizza during a campaign visit to St. Louis. In April of this year, President Obama invited Pi's Chris Sommers and team to the White House to cook that pizza. Surely, that couldn't annoy anyone, right? Except for the owners of Chicago pizzerias. And, of course, dumbass Post-Dispatch commenters. The rest of the month, after the jump.
