Schlafly Tap Room Benefit February 24 to Aid Haitian Earthquake Victims

Though it has been six weeks since the devastating earthquake in Haiti, the situation remains dire, as rescue and recovery workers struggle to provide the most basic of assistance and services. To meet this need, individuals, organizations and corporations continue to dig deep to help fill the gaps in Haiti's ravaged infrastructure.

Rising to the challenge locally is the Tom Schlafly and his Saint Louis Brewery, with a Wednesday, February 24 event, A Taste Of Haiti.

Hôpital Sacré Coeur in Milot, Haiti

​The entire $75 ticket price will go to benefit CRUDEM, a foundation that operates Hôpital Sacré Coeur, a hospital for the residents of Milot (a northern village near Cap Haitien), of whose board Schlafly is a member.

Tomorrow evening's event takes place at the Schlafly Tap Room (2100 Locust Street; 314-241-2337), from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

"Although Milot was not directly hit by the most recent earthquake, our hospital has experienced the consequences of the quake in dramatic ways," Schlafly writes in an open letter on his company's website. "With all of the hospitals in Port-au-Prince destroyed, hundreds of the most severely injured victims have been airlifted to our hospital in Milot. From a normal population of around 65, the number of patients in the hospital has grown to nearly 400, many of whom are sleeping in tents or on the floor in a nearby school or in other makeshift accommodations. Counting the families of the patients, the hospital is now feeding over 800 people per day."

The fundraiser features Haitian cuisine prepared by Tap Room chef Andy White along with fellow chefs from four other local restaurants: Harvest, LoRusso's Cucina, SqWires and Eleven Eleven Mississippi/Vin de Set. Live music will be provided by Mario Pascal, whose group is donating its talents to the cause.

"It's been easy to get participation for this event," Andy White tells Gut Check, adding that he expects attendance to hit about 175. "While there are still tickets left, it is expected that all seats will be sold by the time the doors open."

White notes that Schlafly's annual CRUDEM benefit is still on for August.
