It's Earth Day. Bon Appetit has the ultimate guide to all enviro-friendly food-related goodies, from grocery bags made from recycled t-shirts, direct trade coffee, a primer on CSAs, and three pages of everything a food-loving Earth-dweller will love.

The Food Network prepares to debut The Cooking Channel on May 31 and has announced it's show line-up. There's not a celebrity chef in sight. The New York Times reports that the new network "is lining up low-key programs targeted at a hipper crowd interested in the grass roots of food culture." New shows will focus on the "grit" of cooking. "Someone sent over a demo for a potential show where you could see they were breaking chickens' necks in a restaurant," said channel manager Michael Smith. "I do think we would do that on the Cooking Channel."

Four years ago one of the largest urban farms in the United States was bulldozed. LA Weekly shares the story of the South Central Farmers, who have continued their organic farming on arid land in Bakersfied, California. Thanks to some recent publicity, a glut of donations, including a massive water tank donated from an unlikely source.
