The government thinks the FDA needs to step up food inspections. Despite a rash of recalls in the past six years, the FDA has inspected less than half of the organizations it regulates with the number dropping annually. The food safety legislation currently in Congress would provide more resources for FDA inspections, according to the Washington Post.

The Humane Society released undercover video from egg farms, showing inhumane treatment of chickens. The video was powerful enough to prompt Wendy's, Applebee's, IHOP, and Sonic to switch to cage-free eggs. Agribusiness groups are responding by demanding a boycott on Humane Society donations. The Los Angeles Times said, "In Missouri, livestock farmers are worried that a Humane Society-backed ballot initiative to curtail so-called puppy mills could lead to attacks on livestock interests. They have spurred a bid for a constitutional amendment that would ensure the public's right 'to raise animals in a humane manner . . . without the state imposing an undue economic burden on their owners.'"
