New Crop of Area Farmers Markets

In addition to the upcoming farmers market in downtown's Old Post Office Plaza, the St. Louis area will get at least two more new farmers markets this season.

On the Missouri side, Webster Groves has approved a farmers' market in its Old Orchard district. The market's twenty-week run will begin on Thursday, June 3. Open every Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. in the parking lot of the Old Orchard Shopping Center (corner of Big Bend and Lockwood), the market will feature about twenty vendors. Missouri Wild Edibles is already onboard.

A new market will also debut in the metro east.

The village of Glen Carbon will host its new farmers' market on Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. at Miner Square, 123 Glen Crossing Road. Sponsored by Fond Restaurant of Edwardsville, the businesses in Miner Square, Sweeties, and Miss Bailey's Poppy Patch, the fifteen-vendor market hopes to offer pork and beef, organic produce from small producers and hobby gardeners, potted plants, fresh herbs and baked goods. The weekly fun begins on May 5. The market has been giving updates on Twitter as @GreenMrktGC.

While we're at it, O'Farmers Market in O'Fallon is a one-day event benefiting Marie Schaefer Elementary School. Organized by Strange Folk mastermind Autumn Wiggins, the event will focus on food as well as crafts. It happens on Saturday, May 1, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at 505 South Cherry Street, O'Fallon, Illinois.

Wiggins explains, "O'Farmers Market will be mini-Strange Folk with produce and plants. We'll have indie craft and art vendors, musicians, and craft activities too.

"The possibility that it would be weekly is slim, as farmers are in such high demand at the numerous ongoing markets that have been established already. However, we hope that it introduces some O-towners to the awesomeness of Saturday-morning-market-excursions, and that they will seek out other markets this summer that are convenient to them."
