The annual southern food issue of Oxford American magazine is out, and it features a piece on a Charleston, South Carolina chef's quest for heirloom sesame seeds. Sean Brock pursued the seed breed, last used a century ago, in his quest to re-create antebellum-era dishes. "It goes in layers," he said. "The first thing you taste is this grassiness, and you think, This isn't sesame seed. Then you get this cool, earthy nuttiness, followed by the most pleasant bitter you've ever tasted," according to The Utne Reader.

American military bases in Afghanistan will no longer sell fast food. "Supplying nonessential luxuries to big bases like Bagram and Kandahar makes it harder to get essential items to combat outposts and forward operating bases, where troops who are in the fight each day need," said Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Hall. Reuters said that the Burger Kings, T.G.I. Friday's and Pizza Huts will close as their contracts expire.
