#84: Veal Parmesan Sandwich at Biggie's

Biggie's has always struck me as the quintessential St. Louis neighborhood joint, its walls covered -- as in I couldn't tell you what color or material the walls are -- with photos of family, sponsored sports teams and local sports legends. The food matches the vibe: solid, no-frills Italian-American fare. No surprises, in other words, which is exactly why you're here.

I particularly like the veal parm sandwich. The meat is sandwich-thin, but still thick enough to offer more than the crunch of breading, while the cheese is melted to a nice, mouth-coating consistency not unlike (ulp) Provel's. Served on springy roll that stands up to all that gooey cheese and sauce, with crisp, salty waffle-cut fries on the side (75 cents extra), Biggie's veal parm isn't sexy or even photogenic. It's just plain good.

I'm counting down -- in no particular order -- 100 of my favorite dishes in St. Louis. Some are well-known, others obscure. Some are expensive, others dirt cheap. All of them, I guarantee, are delicious. Please do not hesitate to share your own favorites via the comments thread.
