Pay Your St. Louis Public Library Fines With Canned Food
Some people are less, shall we say, diligent than others about returning their library books on time. (One excuse: These fancy newfangled self-checkout receipts make it harder to discern when a book is due, as opposed to the old-school method of looking at the date stamp inside the front cover.)

Now the St. Louis Public Library has found a way to capitalize on the negligence of its patrons and serve the common good: Food for Fines.
During the month of July, the library will accept canned food in lieu of money for fines. Every donated item will translate into a $1 credit on fines owed, with a limit of $25. (Note: This is only for late items, not lost or damaged ones.) All the food will go to the St. Louis Area Foodbank.
Last year, the Food for Fines program collected 11,570 food items -- enough for 10,612 meals.
