Pork Belly Shortage! Bacon Prices Rise! Panic!

Take a long look. This might be the last pork belly you see for a while.
Bacon. Bacon on everything. Bacon salt. Bacon shoes. Bacon bras. The Bacon Explosion.

Deep down, you knew this day was coming:

According to the Des Moines Register, there is a shortage of pork bellies nationwide.
The price of pork bellies, from which bacon is made, has shot up from 94 cents per pound as recently as June to $1.40 per pound in August.

In stores, average retail prices have risen by more than $1 per pound since last year, to more than $4, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported.

[snip]

Market analysts said the reason for the suddenly high prices is simple shortage: A year ago, 76.3 million pounds of pork bellies were in various commercial freezers around the country. In early August of this year, that storage figure had dropped to 35.4 million pounds.
Which leaves us two choices: Do we fetishize some other kind of meat? Or do we hoard?

This a great opportunity to cut meat consumption and focus on fruits and veggies

NOOOOO!!! What will I eat for breakfast?!

LOL at Michelle.

Vegans are the stupid ones. "Let's NOT eat meat and spend EXTRA money buying supplements of every kind because our diet is nutritionally VOID...just like our brains!"

That was supposed to say get yourself a BLT but in lowercase letters and that font you can't read it very well. . .You can actually make that better by eating a BELT (add an egg)! Then you can eat 2 animals at the same time ;)

Tim, are there feasible and healthy alternatives to factory farmed grain as feed for your pigs? I'm wondering if you feel it's possible to break that cycle you described. It seems like oil is being used to do a lot of the work that grazing animals would willingly do themselves if simply given proper pasture, but of course that takes land and I'm less familiar with the eating habits of swine.

Actually, as a pork farmer, I can tell you it has nothing to do with H1-N1, communist plots, etc. The price of grain to feed my hogs has shot up far more over the last 3 years than I could proportionately raise the price of my stock. This can be traced directly to (SURPRISE !!) the price of oil. So much corn is being used in the production of ethanol that feed corn has reached a staggering premium. This increase in pork pricing still will not make up for my losses in recent years. So, as you take a big bite of your BLT, don't curse me. Big Energy strikes again.

Michelle:

You will eat the meat. Oh yes, you will. Want to know why? Because meat tastes like murder and murder tastes pretty goddamn good!

If god didn't want us to eat animals, he wouldn't have made them out of food.

You have no reason to fear a sudden disappearance of the bacon supply. The shortage is simply a result of hog farmers attempting to catch up with the surge in demand after several years of low prices and the passing of the H1-N1 scare. Production will rise to meet the demand. Go have a bacon sandwich and remain calm.

It's a known fact that Oxygen breathing organisms need to consume other living things to survive. Be it plant or animal we are all alive and part of the food chain therefor I believe there is no ethical difference between eating a pig or a potato. Just because potatos can't walk doesn't mean their lives are less valuble. Vegetarianism is akin to racism in my opinion.

Not all meat are bad.. that Italian sausage may have left a bad after taste but you should try my mini Chinese sausage instead.

I have no problem eating the flesh of other animals. They are generally pretty yummy. Michelle sounds like a vegan, herbivores are the best tasting meat.

I get the feeling that Michelle is anti-bacon. How is this possible? Has she never tasted bacon?

Or do you stop eating the flesh of others? How disgusting to bite into flesh, murdered bodies, miserable lives. There's a shortage because obesity and stupidity are on the rise.
