Wall Street Journal Explores McRib Mania

Next month, McDonald's will bring back its infamous McRib sandwich -- which, as you likely know, is made not from actual pork ribs but from pork pressed into the shape of a rib -- at every one of its U.S. locations. Today, the Wall Street Journal looks inside the strange world of McRib fanatics, whose passion for the sporadically available item is best summed up by this quote:

"It has a ghostly quality," says Mr. Dixon, a 30-year-old graphic novelist. "You don't know when it will appear. It's the girl who you are in love with who has always been a tease to you."
The Wall Street Journal notes that this is the first time in sixteen years that all McDonald's will carry the McRib. (The newspaper also includes one of its iconic black-and-white illustrations of the McRib, which alone is worth clicking through to see.) Otherwise, the sandwich is available at select locations according to an inscrutable and possibly utterly random system.

Thus the need for the McRib Locator, a website that tracks reputed sightings of the sandwich. As you can see from the screenshot above, St. Louis-area McRib fans must take a long trip to enjoy their beloved dish. For them, at least, Nov. 2 can't come soon enough.

For those of us who wouldn't be caught be dead with a McRib, we can take solace that it inspired one of the great Simpsons bits of all time (still funny in a foreign language):
