New York City Says No Food Stamps for Sodas

Despite possible legal roadblocks, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg issues a plan to make sugar-sweetened soft drink ineligible for food stamps. The New York Times reports that New York City requested permission from the USDA to perform a two-year experiment to ban soda purchases with food stamps, but the test might require Congress to change food stamp laws. Federal law dictates what items are covered by food stamps, and the list hasn't been amended since 1977. Congress rejected a similar request from Minnesota in 2004.

The St. Petersburg (Florida) Times reports that a pair of door-to-door meat salesmen have been charged with stealing a barbecue grill while on duty.
