It might be worth tuning into The Late Show With David Letterman tonight to see exactly what happened with Rachael Ray to get Dave all fired up.

After Tuesday night's monologue, the talk-show host issued an apology to Ray, who had recorded a segment with Letterman the day before to air tonight.

Here's how Letterman previewed his interview with Ray:

Rachael Ray comes out, and I'm explaining to her how there's no point in going on a diet because this culture will beat you out of your diet and before long, if you're not careful ... like Carl's Jr. -- they're selling foot-long hamburgers. Ladies and gentlemen, a foot-long hamburger is a meat loaf. Who the hell are we kidding?

"There's these food shows like Cupcake Wars, and then I say, how many billions of people in this world are starving?" Letterman went on. "Fifty million people are starving in this country. They go to bed hungry, but before they doze off, let's watch Cupcake Wars. Does that make any sense?"

By this point, Letterman confessed, Ray was totally bemused, wondering what it was she could have done that set him off. "She was watching a head-on bus crash," Letterman said.

Band leader Paul Schafer conceded that Letterman got "carried away, but for good reason."

Tuesday's apology/rant ended on a serious note, with Letterman pointing out that world hunger is a problem that might be solved, if we weren't so busy watching two 24-hour food networks. "A zesty summer salad? Oh, fine. In parts of Africa kids eat dirt just so their stomachs have a full feeling. Zesty summer salads? Come on! Really?"

"I'm not mad at Rachael," he concluded. "I'm just nuts."

By the time Letterman's apology aired, The Late Show had posted a large link to the World Food Program's donation page, which he referenced in his rant.
