Flame-Retardant Chemicals Found in Butter

At least it's less likely to burn. Discovery News shares a study from the University of Texas group that discovered BPA in canned foods. This time they've found flame-retardant chemicals in butter. The chemicals don't just happen to be in the butter naturally; polybrominated diphenyl ethers are most likely leaching into butter from the packaging. The chemical, which is also used in electronics and furniture polish, can cause reproductive, developmental, and neurological problems. No government agencies currently inspect or track chemical contamination in food.

Would putting the cows on camera help? Probably not, but the world's largest beef producer hopes cameras will decrease foodborne illness. Food Safety News reports that JBS USA Holdings, Inc. hopes to "enhance the company's existing efforts in food safety, quality, and animal-handling activities carried out by employees." They're using the same camera systems used in fast food, and we know how little foodborne illness comes from that industry.

Speaking of vomiting from food, Eater.com announced that Adam Richman is leaving Man vs. Food. He's passing the glutton duties on to viewers while hosting Man vs. Food Nation. They've got audition info for anyone interested in vomiting milkshakes off camera.

Not being filmed: Japanese urbanites who are renting plots of land for small-scale weekend farming called shumatsu nogyo. According to the Los Angeles Times the new trend not only brings people back to the land and provides extra income for professional farmers, but has also created a philosophy called jisan jisho, or "local food for local consumption".
