Wine Enthusiast Dubs Purus Vodka a Top Spirit -- Now, What the Heck Is Purus Vodka?

purusvodka.JPG
So I'm reading through the 2010 edition of Wine Enthusiast magazine's annual list of the Top 50 Spirits, published last week, and I see one of the vodkas namedis Purus 100% Organic Wheat Vodka. Why do I mention this? Because the accompanying blurb notes that the vodka, though distilled in Italy, is based in St. Louis.

Hunh?

It seems Purus -- made with water from the Alps! and organic Italian wheat! -- was launched (under the cover of darkness? while I was out of the country?) a few years ago by Anheuser-Busch. As best I can gather, Anheuser-Busch never made Purus available in St. Louis.

I use the past tense when referring to Anheuser-Busch's involvement because the company no longer owns the brand. A Missouri-based company called Fire Tail Brands does, though the Purus brand is once again in the process of being sold.

Has anyone tried Purus? Or seen it locally?
