Arcelia's in Lafayette Square Closed [Updated]

A tipster tells me that the Lafayette Square Mexican restaurant Arcelia's has closed. A sign on the front door thanks customers for its twenty years of business. Arcelia's first opened in 1990 on South 9th Street in Soulard. It moved to its current location five years later. No one answered the restaurant's phone when I called just now. More as I learn it.

Update: (Tuesday, 1.4, 3:00 p.m.) Not much to add except that I can confirm the closure, having dropped by the restaurant this afternoon and snapped the photo above.

Update #2:
(Monday, 1.10, 3:50 p.m.) Arcelia's website now carries a message saying that the restaurant is "temporarily closed" and looking for "new ownership to carry on the family tradition." (h/t to commenter "Lafayette Square Neighbor")

If they can't make a decent sopapilla, tell them not to bother. This was the only Mexican restaurant that made a puffed sopapilla. Honey, cinnamon and ice cream. Absolutely to die for.

Service was terrible, food just as bad. What a shame. Calling Gordon Ramsey!

The handwriting (and the grime) has been on the wall (and everywhere else) about this place for a couple of years. When Chavas opened five minutes away in Soulard, management here should have taken notice, cleaned up the place, freshened the menu and tried to keep up. The location and the neighborhood are too good to stay vacant for long.

I once went there with Chris Buback. He held my hand and we sang show tunes.

Just as well. The food was just not as good the past 7 or 8 years anyway! And they always had some of the worst service in town. We used to really love this place, but something changed awhile back.
