SSM DePaul Health Center Throws a Soul Food Festival
Who says hospital food has to suck? Thursday at SSM DePaul Health Center in Bridgeton, the cafe's gonna have some soul for its twentieth annual Soul Food Festival. Chef Arvy Dumbrys prepping oxtail soup, fried chicken, smothered pork chops, barbecue beef ribs, fried jack salmon, sweet potatoes, greens, mac and cheese, black-eyed peas, fried corn, slaw, potato salad, peach cobbler, bread pudding, and sweet potato pie for an expected 2250 people.
Dumbrys' has plenty of help. On Tuesday, cafe team members gathered for the annual Pick'n Party to prep 24 cases of fresh turnip and mustard greens.
Food service supervisor Regina Muex, who learned to cook from her family in Tennessee as a child, explains, "It is a time when we can all come together and have an influence on the food in the cafe. You don't have to be an experienced, high-volume cook to participate. You just have to have a passion for African-American history and the importance our food has on our culture."
You also don't have to be a patient to enjoy the feast. It's open to the public in the health center's cafe from 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. Plates with one entree, two sides, a dessert and a fountain drink are $8.49. All items will be available a la carte.
