Greenpeace has released its latest report on the sustainable-seafood efforts of major supermarkets.

The bad news is that none of the major chains scored over 70 points on the 100-point scale, the mark for being considered a "green" retailer.

Safeway ranked #1 overall with a score of 64.61. Among the chains with a St. Louis presence, Target had the best score (63.74, #2 overall), followed by Whole Foods Market (61.77, #4) and Aldi (54.62, #7). Other chains scored include Costco (44.89, #11), Trader Joe's (44.57, #12) and Wal-Mart (44.50, #13).

The Greenpeace seafood-sustainability report (link PDF) includes an analysis of each chain's practices and recommendations for improvement. Whole Foods, for example, is commended for having "the strongest and most complex sourcing policy" of the retailers in the study, but chided for selling eighteen of twenty-one "red list" or unsustainable seafood species.
