Sea Salt's Healthy! Veggies Aren't! We're Confused!

Sliced cucumbers tossed with earthy alfalfa sprouts, sprinkled with coarse Fleur de Sel ... it's a perfect, healthy recipe to refresh on a hot summer day.

If it doesn't kill you!

L&M Companies, Inc. of Raleigh, NC, has issued a nationwide recall of cucumbers. A batch of 1590 cartons tested positive for salmonella contamination.

Considering there's been a dozen recalls on sprouts in just under a year, eating them can feel as risky as indulging in China White smack. This time Jonathan's Sprouts in Massachusetts has recalled all of their alfalfa sprouts, which were sold mainly in East Coast grocery stores and in bulk to restaurants. Again, salmonella contamination.

But the sea salt on the salad's healthy, right?

No.

On Monday U.S. News and World Report published an article claiming that sixty-one percent of people they polled believed sea salt has less sodium than table salt.

All salt, be it table, iodine-infused, sea, kosher, pink, black, or licked off a free pretzel are forty percent sodium, and equally heart-unfriendly.

The same poll showed that seventy-six percent of those polled have heard that red wine is good for cardiovascular health. Of those, thirty percent believe you can drink as much as you want.

This leads to a lot of people letting the sea salt and excess wine duke it out internally. Which is probably worse than salmonella-induced salad trots.
