(Though it bears Shula's name, Shula's 347 Grill is a franchise operation; the Roberts Companies owns the St. Louis franchise.)
Though Shula is best known in the restaurant world for his chain of steakhouses, Shula's 347 Grill offers what its general manager -- or, in the Shula's 347 Grill parlance, its head coach -- Tim Cavanaugh describes as lighter bar-and-grill fare, including sandwiches, burgers and main dishes like seared ahi tuna and pan-seared chicken.
But, yes, there are steaks, including a New York strip and 24-ounce porterhouse, all of them black Angus cuts that meet the specific standards of the Shula restaurant portfolio.
While the Shula's steakhouse chain has a "48oz. Club" reserved for diners who eat an entire 48-ounce steak in one sitting, a 48-ounce steak is not available at Shula's 347 Grill. What if a diner eats two 24-ounce porterhouses in one sitting? Would Shula's 347 Grill honor them?
"We haven't got that far yet," Cavanaugh says, "but we might."
In case you were wondering, according to Cavanaugh, one diner has completed the 48-ounce challenge 200 times, with Don Shula joining him for the 200th meal. The fastest recorded time for eating the 48-ounce steak is seven minutes, bone and all, set by a member of the Miami Police Department...and his canine partner.
Shula's 347 Grill is open 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Call 314-241-7267 for more information.
