Why Restaurants Shouldn't Cross-Post From Facebook to Twitter

Social media experts -- no, we don't know exactly what that entails -- often debate the pros and cons of cross-posting messages from Facebook to Twitter. On one hand, businesses want to reach as many potential customers with their message as possible. On the other, bombarding people with the same message in several networks can drive them away.

There's also the problem that Twitter will shorten a Facebook status update that exceeds 140 characters, which might change the message you're trying to convey.

A local restaurant probably didn't intend to tweet this message yesterday:

For the 1/2 off Appetizers, we are offering our Truffled Frites, North African Style Hummus, Flash Fried Baby... http://fb.me/JWfoEvrNless than a minute ago via Facebook Favorite Retweet Reply

We're positive the good folks at Mosaic (1001 Washington Avenue; 314-621-6001 or www.mosaictapas.com) have never cooked an infant or a child of any age. Unfortunately, the link doesn't go to the original Facebook message, so we're left wondering what kind of babies are being flash-fried.

A little Facebook creeping reveals that they were flash-frying baby artichokes -- which sounds delicious and not at all horrifying.

Glad I'm not the only one thinking this way, and that's a great example you found to demonstrate the potential pitfalls and unintentionally bad messages it can send.  My latest blog post talks about the dangers of cross-posts from a marketing perspective, but I think this example shows the negative consequences equally well...
