Gut Check spent much of National Ice Cream Month looking out for sweet ways to beat the 100 degree heat. Having a bit of a sweet tooth, we've visited more ice cream shops than we care to admit.

So while in Columbus, Ohio, last week, we couldn't resist stopping at the original location of Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream, a small chain that's since expanded all the way to Tennessee.

Jeni's boasts of a wide variety of gourmet, artisanal flavors ranging from Ugandan Vanilla Bean to Riesling Poached Pear Sorbet. The best part? Jeni's uses only the freshest of creams from a local dairy in Granville, Ohio, and combines organic ingredients to make its delectable treats. Everything about Jeni's is natural, and as Jeni herself says on the website, "We explore pure flavor in whatever direction moves us at any moment, every day, all year."

So how, you might ask, would you get your hands on some of Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream without making a gas-guzzling road trip or shelling out your hard-earned money on refrigerated shipping in 100 degree heat? It turns out that Jeni's sells its coveted pints at Straub's. The price isn't exactly a bargain at $9.99 a pint, and the selection is limited to only a few of Jeni's signature flavors, but we guarantee that after one spoonful or lick, you'll be running back for more.

Our addiction was satisfied with a pint of Bourbon Buttered Pecan. The pecans were toasted and well-distributed, the mixture of butter and brown sugar melted on our tongue, and the Bourbon gave the ice cream a nice kick. Sweet yet slightly devilish, the ice cream had a personality.

Even if you're not an ice cream enthusiast, St. Louis's summer months will convert you. And thanks to a small store in Columbus, you can find solace in delicious, unusual flavors that will surprise your palate and cool your inner thermometer.

I've been to Jeni's and it is worth every second of the drive to Ohio. The Riesling Poached Pear is simply one of the best things I've ever eaten. It pains me to pay $9.99 for a pint of ice cream but I've done it many a times at Straubs because I can't resist the craving!
