You Say Tomato, I Say Bullshit: The Reckoning

Last week, I showed you the alleged tomato that I was served at a local restaurant. Today, the review of this restaurant is published, and I can reveal the culprit: PW Pizza (2017 Chouteau Avenue; 314-241-7799). The terrible tomato is especially galling because PW Pizza is, as my review makes clear, a good restaurant.

Here, from Jennifer Silverberg's slideshow of the restaurant, is a photo of these tomatoes in their natural element:

Having just eaten at PW and eaten some absolutely fantastic pizzas made to what I'd imagine are some high standards, seeing a tomato like this out of the place during summer is genuinely surprising. It's gotta be a fluke.

I had a tomato that looked just like that at Frazer's 2 weeks ago. I was really surprised since it is tomato season.

And I really thought Niche or Taste was going to be the culprit.

those tomatoes were unacceptable.  no respectable kitchen should let those be served.  would have liked to have seen you come down a little harder on them, but you column is still a good one.

No they shouldn't, but as a moderestly-priced establishment, they have to do what they can.  I would imagine people would compain a lot more if they were served no tomatoes in their salad than if they were served inferior ones. [assuming there weren't any better specimens in the kitchen]
