Be Nice to Your Service Person or Suffer the Consequences

Have you had your McBeating today?
Yesterday Gut Check discussed why you shouldn't be an asshole to staff members in restaurants, taking the stance that the No. 1 reason to act decent is because there's a human being on the receiving end of the crazy blind rage.

Today, we have reason No. 2 to not be an asshole to restaurant staff members: that staff member possibly served ten years in prison for manslaughter and is a hair away from losing his fucking violent mind when you hassle him during his shift at McDonald's.

That's what happened in a New York City McDonald's last Thursday night. Two women, Denise Darbeau and Rachel Edwards, got angry when employee Rayon McIntosh informed them he had to scan their $50 bill to verify it. The women got an attitude about the routine procedure, so McIntosh beat the shit out of them with a metal rod.

That's right. Beat them with a metal rod, leaving Darbeau, who started the physical confrontation by slapping McIntosh, with a fractured skull and broken arm. Edwards suffered a big cut.

McIntosh is charged with felony assault charges, along with criminal possession of a weapon, while Darbeau and Edwards are charged with menacing, trespass and disorderly conduct.

We don't condone McIntosh's response in the least. No one should be beaten with a pipe. Ever. However, this is what can happen when customers are rude to the wrong service person. If you don't want to be nice in the name of being a decent human being, at least do it so you don't get your skull cracked.

Of course, someone captured the whole incident on video.

Wow, you've got to be one of the absolute crappiest "journalists" I've ever come across. You know damn well that you already knew ALL of the facts that have been released about this incident before you went off and wrote this POS. Deliberately twisting the facts and making it out to be something it's not. You should be ashamed of yourself, apologize for wasting my time, and then you should be fired.

"The women got an attitude about the routine procedure, so McIntosh beat the shit out of them with a metal rod."Wheeler, you are an absolute moron. Did you even watch the video? After shit talking other employees in the restaurant Darbeau slaps McIntosh in the face. Unprovoked. You would know this if you had actually done ANY research on this. Watch the video, you clown. He then pushes them away and proceeds to go to the back. They follow him back. Darbeau even jumps over the counter to make sure she gets to him quickly. After insulting and threatening employees this piece of human garbage assaults a man and then tries to continue to do so after he pushes her away. This article is absolute garbage.

Describing these women as having an "attitude" is like describing the beating as a "slight altercation".

If those women would have stopped "only" after cursing and slapping him, they would have gotten away with it.  They chose to escalate the incident (and God only knows what they would have done) by jumping over the counter.

What do you think that these women jumped over the counter for, to wish him a happy birthday?

Who in their right mind hits a fast food employee and then chargers over? Obviously his reaction was over the top, but I really have no sympathy for those people.Heres an example: Let's say that Im at a club and some huge guy bumps me. I can let it slide or I can verbally attack him. The latter option will probably end up with a horrible beating. The beating was definitely not an even response to my yelling, but the second I open that door I must expect the worse. Its become conventional wisdom not to start with people that can hurt you. The fact that these two people were ignorant to this warrants a beating. Would any of you hit a mcdonalds employee and jump over the counter? If you would, then do you think there should be consequences for your actions (not legal)?

Stupidity, naivety and ignorance led to this beating, not the uncontrollable need to beat the crap out of someone.

I just found this:MANHATTAN — Management of the Greenwich Village McDonald's where a worker beat two female customers who jumped over the counter early Thursday chose not to hire off-duty NYPD officers to patrol the restaurant, police sources said. "This particular McDonald's was approached in the past about hiring uniformed, off-duty NYPD security because of the frequent problems there," a police source said. "They apparently decided it wasn't in their financial interest." The owner of this joint should be ashamed.

Hopefully Robin will be on the end of a beating for neglecting to point out the women assaulted him and then chased him towards the back of the store.

These "excessive force" McFlurries reporters must think the adrenaline pump can be turned [off] like you do your computers or "why didn't the referee ring the bell and stop the fight?" It looked to me that his co-workers timidly granted unchallenged [all areas] back stage passes to these two aggressors. Rayon responded as an individual now on his own.McDonald's doesn't wand its customers before they enter the "order here" line, so if all your crystal balls had already verified the two provokers had no concealed weapons why didnt you just text Rayon the "info"?

Mr/Ms Wheeler.......What version of the assault video did you review, the re-worked rendition that CBS provides?

Perhaps Robin would like to join Darbeau and Edwards outside McDonalds candle light for a few chords of Kumbaya

I think it's ridiculous that he's being charged with criminal possession of a weapon.  It wasn't a weapon, it was just a random pole he grabbed from the back!  And those womyn need to be charged with assault as well, not to mention attempted burglary!

Robin, Please let me come to your work and be rude (I'll slap you in the face). Then when you run away, I am going to jump over the counter and chase you. I am glad to know that you won't defend yourself.

Laurafireball
Laurafireball

those women started it first! they JUMPED over the counter in an attempt to "fuck him up." Doesn't matter if you're a chick or a dude, if you're like "it's go time" and try to fight somebody, either you or the other person will get their ass kicked! In this case, it was those two dumb chicks who were trying to be all bad and start shit.

I understand you are trying so desperately to make Rayon out to be the bad guy here but if you take your racist/sexist/prejudiced blinders off for about 60 seconds and watch the video you will see he was just doing his job. The two "ladies" verbally assault him and then PHYSICALLY assault him at which point he backs away and they come after him behind the counter! What was he supposed to do, what until they got back there so THEY could grab the metal rod and beat him with it?The fact that he's black has nothing to do with this, the fact that he's a man and they are women has nothing to do with this, and his criminal past has nothing to do with this. Something like this could happen to anyone and Robin Wheeler you should be ashamed of yourself for exploiting this story just to get readers for your pathetic blogs.

Dude did you even see what I saw?  This man was defending his life against these women.  They initiated the whole thing by cursing at him, slapping him, and then jumping across the counter to do more damage.  Convicted felon or not this is a case of self-defense, and he has every right to not have bodily harm come to him.  What the hell is wrong with our nation when a person can't defend his life?  Look at this again, and you will see these two women act the straight up fool here.  This man is the victim.

You presented the encounter from a sensational perspective for humor sake, but, as in your article about treating someone decently because they are a human being, a human being's life and liberty is at stake here and humor like this is dangerous to his life. The story is presented as "a worker beat someone" and later we find out that they were the instigator. At first we presume the innocence of these two sweet, nice ladies. As it turns out, they attacked him.

Please treat him more justly than that. Mr. McIntosh is facing very serious charges even though to many it appears that he is indeed not the agressor.

I am SICK of the "women are always victims" Feminist agenda crap being played all the time. This is equality 101, you act like the worst traits of a Man, you get treated like one so stop playing the agenda on this matter.

They clearly Assaulted him violently, he clearly tried to move himself away and they continued to attack, he then defended himself and pacified them so they could not attack further. The second hits were clearly as a result of them continuing to try and get up and continue, despite verbal warning you can hear him giving them to stay down...this is REASONABLE!!

No more feminist horse crap, you want equality DEAL WITH IT!

Imagine, if you will, that Rayon were a young woman who was simply doing her job when suddenly, unprovoked, a male customer slapped her across the face then jumped the counter, while his partner ran around the counter. They both then chased the female cashier to the other side of the store where she was cornered and had no choice but to defend herself. That is exactly what happened in this situation except the sexes are reversed. Don't let Rayon be a victim of sexual discrimination. Women can harm men and Rayon had every right to act in self defense. Please show support in any way you can.

If more assaults by uncivilized, thug wanna be's like these two asshole "ladies" ended like this, pieces of shit like these two would think twice about being unnecessarily rude, and ASSAULTING someone because they are doing their job... I'll put it to you this way, if these two bitches jumped over the counter to CONTINUE to assault and attack me, and the only weapon I had within my reach was a chainsaw, these two skanks would be chopped the Eff up! Don't Fu@k with people, unless you are prepared for the consequences...

Rude? They assaulted HIM. He defended himself.  They hassled him, slapped him, and then went over the counter after him.  Whatever happened to them, THEY provoked. His record doesn't matter, and should not even be a factor.  They should go to jail, not him.

Rick Stevenson

"No one should be beaten with a pipe. Ever. " Really? Ever? Because I'm pretty sure if I physically assaulted you after a few minutes of screaming obscenities at you, and then leaped over the counter to chase you down and continue the attack, you'd have every right to defend yourself. Even if that  meant grabbing the nearest available weapon to do so.

So...they slap the cashier, jump over the counter and continue trying to attack him but you claim the cashier is wrong? What if these woman had knives? The cashier was just defending himself.

what's funny is what happened has been repeated ad nauseum in other articles on apparently better publications and this article still gets the facts wrong days later. wow.

They assaulted him, then jumped over the counter.  They deserved it.  Just b/c you're a woman doesn't mean you can act crazy and nothing is going to happen to you.  For every action, there is a reaction.  In this case, it was a metal rod to the dome.

Mrmarc201
Mrmarc201

You got it all wrong. Those "so called"  ladies first cursed, then assulted him.  He retreated to the back.  One jumped the counter while the other went around the side in an obvious attempt to continue their assult.  Only then did the man take matters into his own hands. He had no idea if they had a gun, knife or other weapon.  I'm sure this was not the first time these thugs tried to put on a show.  The just picked the wrong one this time.

Wfr, in all fairness Robin is a unisex name.  Think of Robin Williams.  I don't think it's fair to assume that a woman wrote this and is trying to push a hardcore feminist agenda. Otherwise I think you are spot on.

Carl Hess
Carl Hess

Okay, to everyone saying "they deserved it" or "he was defending himself", yeah, they were being bitches, and yes, the guy has a right to protect himself. Which I can accept that's what he's doing for the first couple hits. But when he starts hitting them while on the ground, that's over the line.

Alex Bennett
Alex Bennett

Robin could also be a man pushing an agenda.  Possibly feminist, or a paternalist agenda  positing that women aren't capable of being responsible for their actions, and that they can only be acted upon.  Either way this article is based somewhere outside of facts and reason.
