Owner Behrod Ganjifard laughs good-naturedly as soon as Gut Check identifies ourselves as spurned St. Louis Cardinals fans who heard about the "Machine" burger from TMZ.
"The inspiration to the burger is [Pujols'] Dominican Republcian roots," Ganjifard says.
The "Machine" is a quarter-pound of beef seasoned with chimichurri and topped with queso frito, pulled pork, cabbage, tomato, avocado and fried onion straws.
It's a massive sandwich. With a name like "The Machine," Ganjifard explains, the restaurant had to "pile it high."
The burger costs $13.99, which means that with his $254 million contract in hand, Pujols could purchase 18,155,825 of them (tax and tip excluded).
The response so far has been great, Ganjifard tell us, noting the TMZ article. In the three hours that the restaurant has been open at the time of our call, he adds, "We've sold half a dozen."
Will the Mang himself sample the "Machine"?
"I don't know," says Ganjifard. "I would love to, but I have no idea how to get to him."
