Fish Fry Frenzy: Week 2, Webster Groves Lion's Club Gluten-Free Fish Fry
Beginning Today, Friday, March 9, the Webster Groves Lion's Club will hold a fundraising barbecue every second Friday and Saturday through October (excluding July) from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m in the parking lot of Sappington Farmers' Market (8400 Watson Road, 314-843-7848). Today, Friday, March 9, and Saturday, March 10, in honor of lent, the barbecue expands to include a gluten-free fish fry, offering gluten-free fish dinners and fish sandwiches. While fish is inherently gluten-free (as are meat and seafood products in general), the batter used to coat fish before it's deep-fried often contains wheat and gluten ingredients.
Gut Check could only stop by the Lion's Club fish fry long enough to grab a gluten-free fish sandwich and a side of baked beans, which made for a satisfying lunch --- and only set us back $4. The fish sandwich had a nice crunch, and the texture and flavor of the breading reminded us of gluten-free panko. We expected the sandwich to taste more oily and greasy than it did, and were delighted to find a light, flaky sandwich that didn't sit in our stomach like a fistful of greasy regret. It was with sadness that we passed on the tasty-looking gluten-free fish dinner, especially when we realized it came with heaping sides of baked beans and cole slaw, and at $7 a plate, is a great deal even by Lenten fish fry standards. Oh well. There's always tomorrow, right? Or, more realistically, we'll return for dinner tonight?
