Joe Pollack, the long-time restaurant critic at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and a cultural critic at-large for numerous other local publications, TV and radio stations and the blog that he and his wife, Ann Lemons Pollack, wrote, died at home early today. According to the Post-Dispatch, the cause of death was a heart attack or stroke. He was 81 years old.

Pollack's lengthy career included time as a sportswriter and a PR rep, but to the St. Louis food media he was known -- and always will be -- as the city's preeminent restaurant critic: twenty-three years at the Post-Dispatch, reviews for Sauce and St. Louis Magazine, as well as several guides to local restaurants and the local edition of the well-known Zagat guide.

His final review, of the movie We Need to Talk about Kevin, was posted on his and his wife's blog at 5:04 a.m. today.

Gut Check will have more on Pollack's life and legacy next week. For now, our condolences to his wife, family and friends.
