As Daily RFT reported this morning, the Post-Dispatch is currently in the process of laying off an unknown number of editorial employees. Among those already notified is Judith Evans, a 26-year veteran of the Post-Dispatch; for the last nineteen years, she was the paper's food editor.

"I got a phone call [yesterday evening], like everyone else," Evans tells Gut Check this morning. "They said my position had been eliminated."

Evans left the office Thursday unaware that layoffs were imminent. In fact, her last task before departing was to move all of the food-related copy for the paper's August 8 edition.

"It came as a complete surprise, which is perhaps naïve on my part," she admits.

"I wouldn't change anything, though."

During her tenure at the Post-Dispatch, Evans conceptualized and launched the paper's "Let's Eat" section, which in 2003 won the James Beard Foundation's award for "Best Newspaper Food Section" and was a finalist for the same award two other times.

"I've done so many things I never would have," if she hadn't been food editor, Evans says.

"It was a great run."

Stay tuned to Daily RFT and, if necessary, Gut Check for more on the Post-Dispatch layoffs as we learn it.
