On July 18, Gills Onions of Oxnard, California, voluntarily recalled certain packages of its diced and slivered red and yellow onions as well as an onion and celery mix because of possible listeria monocytogenes contamination. As the press release announcing the recall makes clear, listeria is serious business:

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The initial recall didn't involve products shipped to either Missouri or Illinois. However, over the past two weeks, an expansion of the original recall and additional recalls related to it have reached both states.

On July 25, Gills Onions expanded its voluntary recall to include products shipped to Illinois, among other states.

On July 30, Ken's Foods, Inc. recalled five products that contain Gills Onions onions: Golden Corral Tartar Sauce, Dickey's BBQ Bean Sauce, Lee's Cole Slaw Dressing, Fatz Tartar Sauce and Ken's Tartar Sauce. Illinois is among the states to which the products were distributed.

Finally, on July 31, Garden Fresh Foods, Inc. recalled multiple products that contain Gills Onions onions. These products were distributed to both Missouri and Illinois, among other states.
