Grab your party hat and get ready to walk the blue carpet because Blueberry Hill (6504 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-727-4444) is celebrating its 40th birthday this weekend.

While most restaurants are lucky to make it five years, Blueberry Hill has remained a favorite for generations of St. Louisans since its September 8, 1972, debut

Owner Joe Edwards tells Gut Check, "Being in business for forty years is a testament to this great neighborhood and all the great customers and employees I've had."

Edwards is particularly grateful to all the people that have supported him throughout the years: "I love St. Louis and I'm proud that Blueberry Hill has helped to transform the Delmar Loop into one of the best streets in America."

The festivities kick off at 8 pm on Saturday, September 8. Among the events will be a special screening of footage from opening night in 1972 and a a costume contest where the winners will be decided by popularity and an applause-o-meter. Guests can sing karaoke in the Duck Room, enjoy the huge theme cake created by Claire Robberson, the pastry chef at the Moonrise Hotel (6177 Delmar Boulevard; 314-721-1111), and win prizes from the aptly named "Wheel of Prizes."

Those born closest to 8 p.m. on September 8, 1972, will have the chance to be named a "Blueberry Hill Baby." Winners will receive a baby bonnet and sash and could also win such prizes as a free night's stay (with complimentary breakfast) at the Moonrise Hotel, Blueberry Hill gift cards and more.

Rude employees, dirty restrooms, and mediocre food. Location really is everything.
