First, the bad news: Whole Foods Market has recalled a brand of ricotta salata cheese because of the risk of listeria contamination, the company announced yesterday via the FDA.

Forever Cheese Inc., of Long Island, New York, supplied the specific brand, Ricotta Salata Frescolina.

(Also: Forever Cheese is a great name for a cheese supplier.)

The recall affects Ricotta Salata Frescolina with the PLU 293427 and sell-by dates through October 2, 2012.

The good news? Though Whole Foods has recalled the cheese from stores in twenty-one states and Washington, D.C., Missouri is not one of the states included.

So when you spend your lunch hour wandering the aisles of the Whole Foods in Brentwood (1601 South Brentwood Boulevard, Brentwood; 314-968-7744) or the Whole Foods in west county (1160 Town and Country Crossing Road, Town & Country; 636-527-1160), filling up on all the little bits of cheese and fruit and veggie chips being sampled -- not that Gut Check has ever done that ourselves, ha ha, no -- you can snack on any ricotta salata you encounter without fear.
