Election day is fast approaching, and with the implacable persistance of a robo-pollster Gut Check continues to track the polls sales of soda at Fitz's American Grill & Bottling Works (6605 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-726-9555) to see who has the edge in this year's election.

Last time we checked in with Fitz's, Obama bottles were outselling Romney bottles, with 52 percent of sales.

But after two presidential debates and the vice-presidential debate, have sales of Romney bottles begun to close the gap?

According to Fitz's, President Obama still holds a slight edge over Governor Mitt Romney at 52 percent (2,142 bottles sold) to Romney bottle's 48 percent of sales (2,011 bottles sold).

How does this compare to New York Times FiveThirtyEight blogger Nate Silver's numbers?

Silver's number crunching predicts Obama to win 50.1 percent of the popular
vote compared to Romney with 49.8 percent. More importantly -- since as not-ex-President Al Gore will tell you, the popular vote doesn't elect the president -- Silver projects that Obama has a 65.7 percent chance of winning the electoral college.

Gut Check will continue to monitor the Fitz's bottle brawl through November 6, when presumably, both of our long national nightmares will be over.
