Two New Barbecue Joints Ready to Open in South City

In November of last year, we spotted Wilson's BBQ, a new barbecue joint preparing to open at 4904 Devonshire Avenue, just west of the intersection with South Kingshighway Boulevard in the Southampton neighborhood. The restaurant's neon Open sign was dark and its front windows were soaped when we stopped by this past Friday, but a big, flag-festooned sign announcing its grand opening hung outside. Over the weekend, we learned via Twitter that the restaurant had opened. (We also learned that it is cash-only, at least for now.) Wilson's also has its hours posted on its front door: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday.

Meanwhile, a little farther south in the Princeton Heights neighborhood, Smoking Barrels BBQ is set open at 5641 South Kingshighway Boulevard. This space has been home to several restaurants over the years, most recently the very short-lived Iguanas Mexican Cuisine. Not much more to report on Smoking Barrel BBQ at this point -- except that it is evidently proud of the fact that it will be carrying Pepsi products -- but a look through the front windows shows that there are already squeeze bottles of barbecue sauce on the tables, so the grand opening can't be too far away.

More on both places as we learn it.
