Today is Ash Wednesday, which means one important thing to Gut Check: Lenten fish fry season is upon us! Beginning this Friday, February 15, we have seven weeks to gulp deep-fried, golden-brown breaded fish and swig beer in fish fry destinations around St. Louis.

Submitted for your approval, St. Louis, we've rounded-up a list of more than 35 local parishes, community centers, VFW halls and more hosting fish frys this season, complete with a fancy Google map to make fish-fry hopping easier.

While in past years Gut Check has offered in-depth looks at local fish frys, from the traditional Catholic fish and beer buffets to the overwhelmingly popular chiles rellenos at Mexican-American Catholic parish St. Cecilia Parish Church (906 Eichelberger Street; 314-351-1318) in south city to more progressive gluten-free and vegan fish fry celebrations around town.

In addition to our slightly definitive, mostly arbitrary map of the best fish fries in town, we'd also like to hear from you, dear readers. If we missed any essential St. Louis fish frys from our map, kindly submit your top picks to have them added.

VFW Post in Hawk Point, Missouri has the best fish dinners in a 30 mile radius area. Come inside for all you can eat fish, potato salid, slaw, spaghetti with a piece of dessert to finish it all up. Or, get a carry take out. The post has a bar so you can get a beer if so desired. Tea or coffee is provided. Come for good food. Yum Yum!
