The Verdict
Up first: Burger King's Unknown Species. The bread isn't bad, a soft foil to the crisp outside of the fried fish. The pickles add a welcome crunch. And the fish? Tastes like...fish. Yes, Gut Check is pretty certain this sandwich is made with fish. White fish.
When we unwrap our Wendy's sandwich, we're a little let down by the lopsided bun. But our mother taught us never to judge a book by its cover, and the very first bite of this sandwich got our attention. No generic "fish," this. This is cod, pure and simple. The use of panko results in a lighter -- yet still crisp -- shroud for the fish fillet.
Burger King's bun gets the nod, and the accompaniments nudge out Wendy's. But the fish decides this fight, and this Fight Club Sandwich belongs to Wendy's. Premium, indeed!
