Pappy's Smokehouse Dispute Settled; Emerson and Matthews Retain Ownership
The mysterious dispute that pitted the partners behind the beloved barbecue joint Pappy's Smokehouse (3106 Olive Street; 314-535-4340) against one another ended today. George Mahe of St. Louis Magazine broke the news this morning: Mike Emerson (the public face of Pappy's) and John Matthews have bought out partner Michael Wegmann.

Based on what little information was in the public record, Gut Check speculated in February that the dispute might have centered at least in part around the ownership of Bogart's Smokehouse (1627 South Ninth Street; 314-621-3107), which Pappy's pitmaster Skip Steele and three other former Pappy's employees opened in 2011.
Legal agreements between the two parties prevented Emerson from discussing the settlement when Gut Check reached him this afternoon.
"I'm glad to be looking in the rear-view mirror," he says. "Where we're headed from here is to make St. Louis a better place."
