Jilly's Cupcake Bar & Cafe Wins Cupcake Wars a Second Time

Chefs Casey Shiller and Dana Holland hard at work on Cupcake Wars | Food Network
Congrats to Jilly's Cupcake Bar & Cafe (8509 Delmar Boulevard, Ladue; 314-993-5455), two time winner of Food Network's Cupcake Wars! Back in February, Jilly's cupcake chef, Casey Shiller, and its executive chef, Dana Holland, duked it out against other past competitors for a chance at redemption. The theme was the South Beach Food and Wine Festival in Miami, and Jilly's represented the Midwest in what became a battle of the regions.

Shiller couldn't tell us much about the episode when we spoke in April, but the episode aired on Sunday evening, so now the secret's out. Jilly's cupcakes took home the grand prize of $10,000 and the opportunity to have its own display at the South Beach Food and Wine Festival.

We're waiting to hear back from the super busy Shiller, but in the meantime, here are some of our favorite moments from the show:

The episode opened with each of the invited guests talking about their businesses and what they love about cupcakes. Shiller and Holland were shown going about their business at Jilly's while talking about what it means to be back on Cupcake Wars for a third time.

"The $10,000 would be great, but a win for the Midwest," says Shiller, "that's what we're really in it for."

Competitors on Season 8 Episode 5 of Cupcake Wars. | Food Network
Shiller and Holland's fellow competitors came from different regions across the U.S. From left to right, they are: Sweet Mess Cakery from Los Angeles; Just Cupcakes from Virginia Beach; Jilly's Cupcake Bar (our local heroes) and Sugar Mommy Cupcakes from Denville, New Jersey.

For the first round, the competitors were offered four secret ingredients to use as inspiration for a cupcake. The secret ingredients were Coconut shrimp, empanadas, pressed Cuban sandwiches and key-lime pie. Call us crazy, but the only one of those that sounds like it would be a good cupcake is key-lime pie.

One pair of bakers went for coconut shrimp, one chose coconut shrimp and key-lime pie, one chose key-lime pie, and our hometown boys were inspired by the Cuban sandwich, but instead of using pulled pork, they used Cuban coffee (wise choice).
