Not much goes together better than beer and barbecue do, which is why Gut Check applauds the upcoming Pigs and Pints festival at the Civil Life Brewing Company (3714 Holt Avenue).

This Sunday, May 19, from noon to 6 p.m., the Tower Grove-based brewery will tap two new beers, strong bitter and an English-style IPA, which should go nicely with roasted pig.

While Civil Life is taking care of the beer, The Block is handling the food, including the red wattle pigs brought in from nearby Kluesner's Farms. To help oversee the barbecuing, experts from both Pappy's Smokehouse and Bogart's Smokehouse will be on hand ensuring that this will be a high quality affair -- the best of St. Louis 'cue all in one spot.

Rounding out the all-local menu, Companion Bakery is set to provide all the bread, baked goods and treats, and to top it all off, Baileys' Range will serve up its specialty homemade ice cream for dessert.

To go along with the feasting, live music kicks off at noon. with the Bottoms Up Blues Gang, followed up by the highly anticipated reunion of the Folk'n BluesGrass Band who will be on stage till last call. If you have kids and are debating whether you should call a baby-sitter or lock them in the basement, Civil Life is way ahead of you: kids' activities (face painting and a balloon artist) are scheduled from noon to 2 p.m., and a "Kid Zone" will be set up for the entirety of the festival.

This is the second year for Pigs and Pints, and Civil Life promises a bigger and better festival, including a super-sized tent, more barbecue, more music and more beer. Still, Civil Life advises you act fast, as there's a limited amount of tickets and they do expect to sell out. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at its brewery. Tickets cost $45 for adults, $7 for kids ages five to twelve and free for kids under five.
