A new bakery and coffee shop, Amy's Corner Bakeshop (4476 Chouteau Avenue; 314-371-2253) will open its doors Friday, July 26, in the Grove. Co-owner Amy Verkamp-McArthy is planning a quiet opening tomorrow for customers as she puts all the final pieces in place.

"I'm terrified, but I'm also excited. I've never done anything like this," Verkamp-McArthy says. "We love the area, we love the space, and we love to bake! So it came together." Verkamp-McArthy worked as a copy editor at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for twelve years before she got laid off about a year ago. She had always baked, and she began doing some business out of her home.

She and her husband, Matt McArthy worked with Restoration St. Louis beginning in October to find the right spot for Amy's Corner Bakeshop. The McArthys felt the Grove was a good fit because there's really nowhere for a cinnamon roll in the morning or a cupcake, and she says their neighbors have expressed -- much to their satisfaction -- that Amy's will definitely be filling a hole in the community.

Amy's will also continue to do special-order and custom projects like wedding cakes; it will also be serving Kaldi's Coffee. "The core will be cinnamon rolls and muffins, a couple of cupcakes, but we don't want to be just a cupcake shop. We're going to have cookies and brownies," Verkamp-McArthy says. "I have a great tiramisu -- cheesecake, pies. We're just going to spread it around and see what works."

She'll also have seasonal products and things that won't be available all the time. "It's been a lot of fun to come up with whatever sounds good that day," which right now, she says, is berries and peaches. The decor will be minimalist, bright, fresh and clean, Verkamp-McArthy says.

Verkamp-McArthy is also eight months pregnant, so needless to say she'll soon be a very busy woman. "But we're confident that with help from our families and friends we can still make it work. This little one will join Olivia, who's 21 months old, as a weekend dishwasher!" she jokes.

Amy's will be open at 8 a.m. on Friday at the corner of Chouteau and Taylor avenues in the Grove.
