Your Pick for St. Louis' Most Underrated Sandwich Shop Is...

LeGrand's Facebook
We got hundreds of votes for St. Louis' most underrated sandwich shop last week, and at last we have a winner! The victorious sandwich shop garnered 38 percent of the vote, with the next candidate coming in at a pretty distant second with 20 percent. Find out who won after the jump.

WINNER: LeGrand's Market and Catering (4414 Donovan Avenue; 314-353-4059) is your pick for St. Louis' most underrated sandwich shop.

We got some grief for featuring places that aren't exactly "underrated," but hey, this was a list compiled by the people, for the people. Second place went to Gioia's Deli, which we've named one of the best delis in the city in the past. Here's the full report:

  1. LeGrand's Market & Catering (4414 Donovan Avenue; 314-353-4059): 38.41 percent
  2. Gioia's Deli (1934 Macklind Avenue; 314-776-9410): 20.39 percent
  3. Majic Market and Convenience Store (640 West Woodbine Avenue, Kirkwood; 314-966-5056): 15.96 percent
  4. Blues City Deli (2438 McNair Avenue; 314-773-8225): 13.9 percent
  5. Other: 11.33 percent

Original poll here.

The most popular write-in was Nora's (another of our favorites) followed by Mom's Deli.

If you've never been to LeGrand's, we recommend the "Legend Club," named one of the 100 best dishes in St. Louis last year. It's made with Salsalito turkey, pastrami, pepperoni, bacon, hot peppers, Havarti cheeses, garlic cream cheese and roasted red pepper sauce. But don't stop there -- make time at your lunch break this week for one of the many St. Louis-themed sammies, like the "Fredbird," "Stan the Man" or the "Blues Special."

We'll be back next week with another edition of Underrated/Overrated -- got an opinion about which food group we should tackle next? Tell us in the comments.

Had LeGrands Legend for the first time today. Great, but still voting for Gioias hot salami & roast beef on cheese garlic bread with pepper cheese!

"this was a list compiled by the people, for the people" if we could just get that same mentality transferred over to the "Best of St. Louis".  Congrats to LeGrands, the little Tomboy that could, and should be recognized for making sammiches the way we like to eat them.  The days of Amighetti's and Ruma's getting all the attention have long since passed (I personally think they both franchised themselves out of the hierarchy).  But I also think that the old "go to" places have become stagnant in their offerings (Mom's Deli and 'Psghetti's come to mind).  I will give a special, "tip of the cap" to Gioia's Deli though.  They're a place that will actually steer you away from one of their sammiches if it isn't pulling it's weight for the week.

How on earth is LeGrands "underrated"? Lot's of people love it. Rightfully so.

@MISJIF C'mon now, don't say "sammiches."  It's not cute and it just makes you look dumb.

@ascrit @MISJIF With nothing better to add to the conversation, I beg to differ who looks dumb.  It wasn't intended to be cute either. You need a good sammich.  Go to LeGrands.

@ascrit @MISJIF "Little kid mispronunciations" like Psghetti's?  Gee, that was a dumb idea.  Joining up here at RFT to just to call out someone who likes a good that's weird, lame, dumb and pathetic.  But, it appears I'm "your" motivation.  Maybe you should get another hobby.  Start by reading the urban dictionary..... can be part of the 14% who don't like the term sammich.

@MISJIF Okay, now I am curious.  So if using a little kid mispronunciation isn't some lame attempt to be cutsey what exactly is your weird motivation?
