Missouri Named Best State For Drinking

4 Hands Brewery, one of the reasons we won. Probably. | RFT Photo

Today in the rest of the country realizing how awesome we are, Time magazine named Missouri the best state for drinking. The worst? Utah (duh).

The honor was not bestowed upon our humble state for our famous brewery, but rather our drinking laws. At first we were surprised (still smarting over that "minor in possession through consumption" ticket). But of course, Missouri has no laws against open containers. How else are we supposed to have picnics at Forest Park?

Plus, the only places you can get arrested for public intoxication are schools, churches and courthouses. The kicker is that it's actually illegal for towns to pass laws that require arrest for being drunk in public.

We beat out Nevada, which comes in at No. 2, and Wisconsin. Massachusetts and Pennsylvania round out the worst.

There are lots of reasons to love drinking in St. Louis, let alone the whole state. Cheers, Time.

Apparently, Dent County is not part of Missouri. We are over-run with Baptists, who have some sort of doctrine about only drinking behind closed doors with the shades pulled down.

Is it because our group of friends lives in the state? Just saying.

I don't think any craft breweries that distribute are having a terrible time. There are 3-4 very new breweries that are winning medals on your home turf and starting to sell in your local stores. Just terrible I tell ya. (If you are even in CO)

We don't deserve #1 at all when compared to Nevada. We don't have 24/7/365 buying ability so this state still sucks on my list.

50 breweries in Missouri. 150+ in Colorado with a new brewery opening every 2-3 weeks.

Boulevard would be a bottom of the list craft beer in CO (still never seen it out here). MO is a terrible place to be a craft brewery because of the distribution laws and the way a certain company throws its weight around in state gov.

I read it was "number 2" and I noted the irony of how we are also "tops" in violent crime.

4 Hands, Schlafly, Boulevard, Civil Life, 2nd Shift.... and many many more. But I guess that is all shitty beer, that's why so much is being exported to NY, Chi, KC, Philly, Denver ect.

Was that a serious comment? Or do you just not drink craft beer? Perennial Artisan Ales: 2 year old brewery that has already won 1 gold and 2 silver medals. Gold for BA Abraxas, Silver for BA Sump and Heart of Gold wheat wine. BA Abraxas is #35 on Beer Advocate's list of Top 250 beers. Abraxas Day was covered by the RFT, but what do beer nerds driving to StL from Chicago, Indiana and Kansas know? http://blogs.riverfronttimes.com/gutcheck/2013/11/abraxas_day_at_perennial_artisan_ale_crowd_line.php

Most CO craft beers are overrated.  More time spent on marketing than actually creating good beers.
