Blood & Sand Owners to Take Over Vacant Citygarden Restaurant

We were hoping Shake Shack would get in on the Citygarden space vacated by Joe's Chili Bowl, but it looks like the new tenants will be a little more high-end. The owners of Blood & Sand (1500 St. Charles Street; 314-241-7263), the members-only bar and restaurant, are taking over the space and calling their new restaurant Death in the Afternoon. The name is either inspired by the Ernest Hemingway novel, or the drink of the same name, also invented by Hemingway -- it's absinthe and Champagne.

The Post-Dispatch's Ian Froeb broke the news on Twitter last night. The executive chef at Blood & Sand Chris Bork just left at the end of last year and was replaced by Central Table Food Hall's Nick Martinkovic. It's unclear at this point whether Martinkovic will have anything to do with Death in the Afternoon.

We called Blood & Sand yesterday to speak to owners TJ Vytlacil and Adam Frager, but were told they were in a meeting and unable to comment. Here's the relevant portion of an e-mail that went out to Blood & Sand members last night:

The other announcement we are thrilled to share with everyone is that we will be opening a new restaurant in late Spring. The name of the restaurant is Death in the Afternoon and it will be located in the old Terrace View in Citygarden (http://www.citygardenstl.org/).

For anyone not familiar with Citygarden, it is an acclaimed urban oasis that is truly special and is an incredible asset for our city. We are elated at the opportunity to make it even more of a destination.

We are fully aware that we wouldn't be in this position if it weren't for our amazing members who have supported and believed in us. From our entire staff, we can't fully express our gratitude and appreciation we have for you. You have given us the ability to share our passion for what we love to do, and there is no greater gift than that. We'll announce more details as we approach the opening, but as a small thank you there will be a couple of soft openings prior to launching that will be for Blood & Sand Members only.

Again, thank you.
