On February 8, Magnolia Café (3524 Washington Avenue; 314-925-7556) held its grand opening in Grand Center. The small cafe is located on the bottom floor of local community radio station KDHX's recently established Larry J. Weir Center Center for Independent Media. The business is a partnership between KDHX and Urban Canvas Events and Spaces, who operate the cafe serving breakfast, lunch and a selection of beverages for in-house events.

Named after KDHX's longstanding broadcast location on Magnolia Avenue, the cafe features the brand's signature red-and-white color scheme. One wall honors the station's major donors with record-shaped placards, while another yields the stop-sign-red logo. With seats for about thirty, visitors can grab a table for a quick lunch meeting or sip coffee at the marble-topped bar.

The lunch menu features health-conscious options including a selection of salads and sandwiches including a "Sea Salt Turkey" wrap ($7.50) with bacon, smoked gouda, sea salt turkey and red pepper aioli -- add some housemade chips for $1. Barista Drew Davidson also recommends a roasted veggie wrap ($6.75) with sundried tomato, feta cheese, hummus and more.

Breakfast items include bagels, muffins and parfaits, with goods sourced from local purveyors. Drinks include Goshen coffee and espresso, a rotating selection of fresh juices, fruit smoothies and a couple of local drafts on tap for evening events.

Magnolia Cafe's current hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cafe also serves drinks after-hours for events held in the building's adjoining venue, the Stage, including KDHX's free public film screenings, DJ spins and presentations.
