Last week the opening of Urban Chestnut Brewing Company (4465 Manchester Avenue) in the Grove officially put St. Louis' biggest craft brewery on the map. The 70,000-square-foot facility houses the hardware to produce 15,000 barrels this year as well as a bierhall that debuted at the Wolpertinger Festival in late January.

Now, visitors can stop in any day for a drinking and dining experience fit for a German. A walk-up counter to the facility's full-size kitchen offers hearty options including charred escarole salad ($11) with cider poached apples; spatzle ($13) with wild mushrooms, brown butter and herbs; and sandwiches including the "Strammer Max" ($14) with Black Forest ham, comté cheese and a farm egg on rye.

Smaller options include liege waffles and Bavarian doughnuts for dessert, and snacks including corn nuts, pork rinds and deviled eggs. All would be for naught, however, without a pint of Urban Chestnut's brews to pair accordingly. Plenty of handles await for fresh pours, backed by the equipment in which they were born.

Several taps to choose from.
Visitors can walk themselves through the enormous facility with helpful background available via colorful self-guided tour placards. Alternatively, leave all that footwork for the more inquisitive -- we're just here for the beer.

Urban Chestnut Brewing and Bierhall's current hours are Monday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, check out the Urban Chestnut website and follow it on Facebook.
