Get outside this weekend with the St. Louis Earth Day Festival or the Edwardsville Beer Festival. Grow your own delicious herbs with the help of the Webster Groves Herb Society or learn about chemical-free makeup at Local Harvest Cafe. We know, Netflix is tempting, but there are so many cool events this weekend. Check out our food-related recommendations after the jump.
Friday (Apr. 25):
Local Harvest is all about clean eating, so it's no surprise it's a proponent of clean beauty, too. Herbal chemist Julie Longyear will teach you about chemical free makeup that actually works over breakfast that will help your beauty, too. Yoga teacher Jill Duncan will also discuss beauty through self love. From 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Tickets are $10; register here.
Saturday (Apr. 26):
"Sweet old Edwardsville, how you've changed. Some of us who grew up among your shaded lanes and who daydreamed of leaving at first opportunity now find ourselves wishing for return. You're still small enough to offer plentiful green space, quiet serenity and a low crime rate; you're also worldly enough to boast a good state university branch, a superb live-music venue (the Wildey Theatre), highly touted restaurants and a microbrewery. It's the latter asset, Global Brew Tap House & Lounge, that hosts the Edwardsville Spring Beer Festival on the grounds of Edwardsville City Park (Route 159 at South Buchanan Street, Edwardsville, Illinois) today from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., rain or shine. Participating craft breweries include locals such as Civil Life and Urban Chestnut Brewing, as well as national companies Victory Brewing and Dogfish Head; in fact, more than twenty breweries will have their trailers parked, and edibles will be available from foodie luminary Cleveland-Heath, along with other fine establishments. The festival is free and open to all ages, but you must be 21 to purchase beer. Proceeds from beer sales benefit the Boy Scouts. The annual herb sale starts at 8:30, but there's usually a line before then. Get heirloom vegetables, herbs, advice from expert gardeners and books. You'll find basil, lavender, rosemary, thyme, sage, mint and more. Check out everything the society will have here. From 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free.
Break Out the Grill Cooking Class @ Rendezvous Cafe and Wine Bar
Learn how to grill more than just burgers at this cooking class. Chef Lauren from Rendezvous and Robert from di Olivas Olive Oil Emporium will teach you to make margherita pizza, grilled vegetable salad with olive oil and feta, asparagus and shrimp using a Himalayan salt block and grilled pineapple. From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. $35 per person.
Sunday (Apr. 27):
Yes, this annual festival is all about the environment, but there's lots of delicious food, too. Enjoy the day outside and grab food from places like Blind Tiger, Atomic Cowboy, The Dam, Falafel Hut, HandleBar, Hot Aztec, Lulu's Local Eatery and lots more. From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free.
Apple cider is all the rage these days, and chef Lou Rook III is out to prove that it can pair with food just as well as beer or wine. Cidermake and vintner Brad Genung will be on hand throughout the dinner to discuss his products. The four-course dinner includes dishes like smoked trout, beef tenderloin carpaccio, chicken fried lamb chop, foie gras mousse and lots more. Check out the full menu here. The eleventh annual fundraiser raises money for Shepherd's Center of Webster-Kirkwood. Enjoy eats from the best restaurants in Webster and Kirkwood and bid in a silent auction for a good cause. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and restaurants are serving form 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40, available at the Shepherd's Center.
