#79: Skordalia at the Purple Martin
This is not just my usual weekly selection. It's a plea to Brooke Roseberry and Tony Lagouranis, owners of the Purple Martin (2800 Shenandoah Avenue; 314-898-0011). See, just recently they announced that they're revamping the menu at their delightful Fox Park eatery.
Guys, I'm begging you: Keep the gloriously garlicky skordalia dip on the menu.
Shortly after I reviewed the Purple Martin and fell in love with the skordalia, Roseberry announced the decision. Although she and Lagouranis had imagined the Purple Martin as a North African-Mediterranean eatery, the neighborhood residents wanted something different. This, coupled with chef Chase Overaker's background in classic American cooking, prompted the owners to rebrand the restaurant as a comfort food spot.
Roseberry has assured me that the skordalia will stay, giving patrons the opportunity to experience this tart, pleasantly pungent dip laden with cloves of roasted garlic. She may change the name of the dish to "garlic dip," but that's fine. A stinking rose by any other name would smell (and taste) as sweet.
