Church's Chicken on Delmar. | Nancy Stiles

The vacant Church's Chicken (6190 Delmar Boulevard) might finally be saved. Washington University is apparently eyeing the spot at Delmar and Skinker Boulevards, which has been empty since Church's closed in May 2013.

Local blog nextSTL reports that a source close to the situation says Church's may be Wash. U's next development project. It's just across the street from the new student residences going up on the block next to Mission Taco Joint.

A Wash. U. spokeswoman said that there are no "formal development plans" for the site. Loop developer Joe Edwards also reportedly tried to acquire the site, with no luck. Whatever happens, we can probably all agree that something needs to be done with the lot -- it's primo real estate in a bustling neighborhood. Why not put it to good use?

Isn't the lot just inside the city line? Hopefully that will deture corporate entities from taking it.

Bradley...successful urban neighborhoods are often extremely difficult to park in (of course, right? they're in high demand). Solving that "problem" should not entail taking up prime corners for surface parking, of all things. That problem can be alleviated by parking farther away at a metered spot, using a garage (the Loop will soon be home to two), or not driving into the area at all (a MetroLink station is already present; soon there will be a Trolley too, not to mention the bus).

turn it into an art gallery for the art department until they figure out the final plan... duhhh

Could easily be turned into gallery space for the art department while they figure out what to do with it. Seems like an obvious solution

@dalediversity I guessed it would take not more than 5 comments in an RFT or STLToday blog article to read something racist. Affirmed.

@jwimmer2 "Natives" means people indigenous to the area. There are people of many races in UCity. Why do you assume they are all black? Do you have a problem with that?

@dalediversity @jwimmer2 Actually yeah, you said natives, you then followed with a stereotypical comment aimed towards African Americans. You're entitled legally to your freedom of speech, but you're a massive asshole with a horrible upbringing for thinking like that. I'm willing to bet you would not dare be such a scumbag racist when you're not behind a computer screen.
